A Message from the Principal

Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year at Coker Elementary! We are excited about the upcoming year and know that "If It's to Be, It's Up to Me!".  In order to achieve success, we will remain committed to a culture of continuous quality improvement and our focus will continue to be on teaching and learning. Our focus on literacy this year and commitment to a GROWTH MINDSET for ALL teachers, students, and parents we believe will help us achieve greater results.  We will provide a safe, secure, and orderly learning environment that is also supportive and academically challenging. We promise you that we will work very hard to help all students reach the highest levels on all local, state, and national assessments. We will also engage students in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies in ways that will encourage them to want to learn more.
However, we need your support to be totally successful: •  Join the Coker Cub Club and get involved. This PTO organization supports the teaching and learning at Coker everyday. It is a great way to make a difference! •  Please support us by reading the student handbook and adhering to our policies and procedures. •  Our dress code is designed to reduce the likelihood of distractions and to maintain an academic focus in the classroom and on campus. Please make sure that your child’s dress adheres to the dress code guidelines. •  Put the dates for school holidays and early release dates on your calendar. •  Put the testing dates for your child’s grade level on your calendar now and don’t schedule doctor’s appointments that would conflict with testing. •  Read with your child every night and check over his/her homework when it is done. If he/she has lots of trouble with his/her homework, let the teacher know. •  Check your child’s bookbag every night and ask for the conduct/work folder on Friday. Celebrate the good work and behavior and help him/her correct or make plans to fix areas of need. Please sign any necessary paperwork and return it to the teacher each week on time. •  Read weekly/monthly newsletters from your teacher carefully and help your child plan for studying and projects. •  Make sure your child is getting adequate sleep. Most elementary age children need 8 – 10 hours every night. •  Give your child a good breakfast and a hug as you send him/her to us each day. •  Contact your teacher with an email, note, or call if you have questions or concerns. Understand that they are very busy teaching during the day, but they will try very hard to get back to you within 24 hours.
Thank you for giving us the privilege of teaching your children. Thank you also for supporting us. Coker Elementary is a GRRREAT school! Your support, as parents, makes a huge difference in our success. At Coker, we encourage our students daily with the saying, "If It's to Be, It's Up to Me!" and we are committed to the Murray County Schools vision of "Committed to Student Success - No Exceptions, No Excuses."
